UCF hires Josh Heupel as head coach, Randy Shannon to coach defense

Central Florida tabs Josh Heupel as head coach

Central Florida has hired Heisman-runner up quarterback Josh Heupel as its next head coach, athletic director Danny White announced Tuesday. "He's no stranger to success, winning a national championship as a quarterback and leading a number of extremely high-powered offensive teams".

He inherits a Knights program that just finished 12-0 to win the American Athletic Conference title.

The Tigers' offensive coordinator, according to a tweet from center Trystan Castillo, did not communicate the move with his players.

Early reports had UCF targeting former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin as Frost's replacement, but talks apparently stalled, leading to Heupel's hire. He also was praised for developing Heisman trophy victor Sam Bradford, as well as Landry Jones. It's unclear how the Missouri players learned of the news, but wide receiver Emmanuel Hall was quick to point out the turnover in the job - a third coach in four years.

"I believe we've identified one of the brightest offensive minds in college football".

Heupel, who quarterbacked the Sooners to the 2000 national championship and was the Heisman Trophy runner-up that year, spent 2015 as Utah State's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and was offensive coordinator at Missouri the past two seasons after OU let him go following the 2014 campaign. I know he's going to utilize all the great talent on our roster and continue to add to it.
