The Crown's Matt Smith admits that he 'feels sorry' for Meghan Markle

Prince William Prince Harry Royal Wedding Best Man

Many celebrities came forward to gush about the engagement, with most sharing their excitement for Meghan.

Speaking at an event in NY on Monday, the actor, who plays the Duke of Edinburgh in the Netflix drama, said he pities the bride-to-be because "life as she knows it is gone".

Meanwhile, Harry attended his first solo duty since his engagement news at the annual London Fire Brigade carol service at Westminster Cathedral last night (5 December).

"I feel sorry for her", Matt admitted.

Matt plays reluctant royal consort Prince Philip in Netflix drama "The Crown", which no doubt triggered his compassionate response to the engagement.

If, like us, you're already suffering from Meghan Markle withdrawal symptoms - she hasn't been pictured since her first public engagement with Prince Harry last week - we can at least explain why she's been absent from public life, and probably will be over the next few months.

While most people would expect her go-to products to be pricey, Meghan actually has some very budget beauty must-haves.

For two season the actor has played the husband to Claire Foy's Queen Elizabeth on The Crown.

In "The Crown", Prince Philip struggles with the same transition Markle is only now starting to experience as he adjusts to living in the shadow of the monarch.

However, Matt's commentary wasn't all doom and gloom, with him ending his statement with: "But hey, she's marrying the prince of Britain-how exciting for her".

Discovery Communications-owned lifestyle channel TLC is prepping a special about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's journey from courtship to proposal. "And they really have".

"This would not have been conceivable, this would not have happened 50 years ago", reckoned Foy.
