Florida State introduces Willie Taggart as new head coach

WATCH LIVE: FSU introduces Taggart as new head coach

During halftime of Florida State's basketball game against Loyola (Md.), fans were able to hear from new football coach Willie Taggart.

"Go Noles!" Taggart said shortly after deplaning at Million Air Tallahassee about 2:15 a.m. Wednesday and just before entering a vehicle to be driven away.

There was no other way, Taggart said during Wednesday's press conference.

Yahoo Sports reporter Pete Thamel reported Taggart's contract is a six-year, $30 million deal, according to sources.

Well that's one way to send a coach out.

"He said, 'Dad, I know you're struggling with this decision and I know that's your dream job, and he said, 'You always tell me to chase my dreams and don't let anyone get in the way of it, '" Taggart said.

College football's early signing period lasts from December 20-22.

As Mullens began his second coaching search in less than a full calendar year, players and members of the touted but eroding 2018 recruiting class lobbied for Oregon's assistants to be retained. Co-offensive coordinator Mario Cristobal will lead OR in the bowl game against Boise State.

Taggart has a 47-50 overall record as a coach, but he is known for turning around underachieving programs.

"There's a number of coaches on our staff that have head coaching capability", Mullens said Tuesday.

Before taking the reins at Oregon, Taggart spent four seasons at South Florida.

Some possible outside candidates Mullens could pursue include former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, former Florida coach Jim McElwain, Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford and Boise State coach Bryan Harsin. It started last Thursday with the knowledge that FSU was interested in him, Taggart said. The Seminoles have appeared in 36 consecutive bowl games.

One of the most important people in Willie Taggart's life said she is thrilled to have her son back in their home state.
