Apple pulled back the curtain on its Best of 2017 lists on Thursday, highlighting the most popular apps, games, books, TV shows, movies, music and podcasts of the year. Over on the iPad, photo editing suite Affinity Photo was picked as the app of the year and 3D puzzler The Witness came out on top in the game of the year category.

Rather interestingly, the game of the year choices for iPhone and iPad are not freemium titles.

The top 4 trends of the year according to Apple were AR, multiplayer games, mental and reading apps.

Super Mario Run tops the most downloaded games chart, followed by 8 Ball Pool, Snake VS Block, Ballz, Word Cookies and Subway Surfers.

Apple's iPhone app of the year is Calm, a health-and-fitness app that provides soundtracks and guides for meditation, including routines to help you sleep.

While Snapchat was the most downloaded app of 2016, it slipped to the number two position this year, with Snap-owned Bitmoji taking top honors.

Apple also has new editorial this time around; "trends of the year". Apple features augmented reality, online realtime mobile games, environmentally-minded apps for sustainable living, and apps to help with parenting.

Drake's More Life was the No. 1 album of the year, Apple said, while Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" was the most listened-to song.

Taylor Swift's album "reputation" has already shot up to number three on the 2017 United States top album charts, despite having only been available for a short period of time.

Apple also listed the top movies in the Apple Store, with Disney's Moana ranks first followed by Wonder Woman, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in the third spot. Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory and Rick and Morty topped the iTunes TV charts this year.
