Chiefs Suspend Marcus Peters for One Game

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid suspends Marcus Peters for incident at Jets game

Smith believes that the team stands ready to move on this week against the Raiders without Peters. However, as the Chiefs have grown accustomed to, a string of errors cost them a needed victory. Instead, an unnecessary roughness penalty by defensive tackle Bennie Logan yielded an automatic first down. Teammate Steven Nelson earned a penalty for defensive holding on an unsuccessful two-point conversion try by the Jets. Three plays later, quarterback Josh McCown scored the go-ahead touchdown.

Even worse, the Chiefs had turned it over seven times in those four games. The club hit its nadir in Week 11, losing to the Giants despite coming off a bye.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a tough task ahead of them.

"I've got a group of guys that are veterans players that have been around and are good leaders", Reid said. Nagy will continue to call plays for the foreseeable future.

Reid still had his fingerprints on the play sheet, of course. "But again, I've always told you, I'm going to do what I feel is best for this organization for that time and I try to set back and evaluate it, and that's what I did with this and this is the conclusion I came down with".

"I like Marcus Peters so that's a hard thing to do", Reid said. He's one of the league's best cover men, with 17 interceptions in less than three seasons. The MVP talk around him has long since subsided, and Smith now seems more likely to end up on the bench than at an awards podium. The loss, which completed a Chiefs sweep, costs the Raiders the division title. Whenever a divisional matchup takes place, anything can happen.

Replacing a proven quarterback during the season rarely brings about the desired impact.

Now, the Chiefs have to find a way to win without their top cornerback. Kansas City TE Travis Kelce has receptions in 60 consecutive games. Jack Del Rio is 1-4 against Chiefs as coach of Raiders and 6-6 against them overall.

Peters will forfeit one game check, which comes out to $76,840, as part of his suspension. Kansas City's secondary must now rely upon the embattled Phillip Gaines and Darrelle Revis, the recently signed 32-year-old corner far removed from his prime.

The Chiefs' inconsistent pass rush will as well. The team shares the AFC West lead with Oakland and the Los Angeles Chargers.
