Sufjan Stevens Shares A Touching Tribute To Tonya Harding

I Tonya comes out in theatres Dec. 22 2017

Believe it or not, notorious figure skater Tonya Harding has a connection to Batman - and it is actually pretty special.

I, Tonya, which was inspired by interviews with Harding herself (among others). tells her story from childhood to the present, with a focus on the years she spent as the best figure skater in the country and her tumultuous downfall. In January, however, Harding's competition, Nancy Kerrigan, was attacked by an assailant after a practice session during the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit.

Photos of Tonya Harding in 2017, however, are much fewer and farther between. Since leaving her skating career, Harding has tried various faculties to start a new career over the years, from music to boxing. I'm referring, of course, to the incident that took place on January 6, 1994; on the eve of the National Championships that would decide the US skating team bound for the Winter Olympics in Lilliehammer, Norway. When Tonya and Gillooly got married, they filmed themselves having sex on their wedding night and produced one of the first-ever celebrity sex tapes (which they sold to Penthouse for $200,000 each). "We just need to implement some sort of order and system and make sure people are respectful and creative at the same time and not take advantage of positions of power". The song is not connected to the new biopic film on Harding, I, Tonya, which is out this Friday and stars Margot Robbie as Harding, although Stevens said he offered the song to the film's director, Craig Gillespie.

The native of Australia's Gold Coast was more apt to be surfing than skating growing up, and her training for I, Tonya "was a rude awakening", she says. Allison Janney, who portrays Harding's mother LaVona, had a similar response: "Wow, this is incredible", she said.
