AP Player of the Year finalists: Mayfield, Love, Jackson

Baker Mayfield among three Heisman Trophy finalists

The No. 2 Sooners (12-1) will face the No. 3 Bulldogs (12-1) in the College Football Playoff semifinals on January 1 in the Rose Bowl.

The Georgia Bulldogs will certainly have their hands full with Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield in the Rose Bowl. "However, like I stated previously I do not need a trophy or to be named a finalist to define me as a player", Barkley wrote on Instagram.

For the second straight year, Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson will be a Heisman Trophy finalist. For comparison, Jackson has enhanced his completion percentage to 60.4 percent (from 56.2 percent last season) and increased his passing average to 290.8 yards per game (from 272.5 yards per game last season). With little fanfare, the quarterback is averaging 411 total yards - up from 393 last season- and accounted for 42 touchdowns. "They both had great seasons and deserve this tremendous honor".

Griffin won back-to-back Heisman trophies for Ohio State in 1974 and '75. Notable snubs include Penn State running back Saquon Barkley (179.5 all-purpose yards per game), San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny (FBS-leading 2,027 yards) and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor (1,847 yards, on pace for FBS freshman rushing record).

Many teammates took to Twitter to express their discontent, including junior safety Parker Baldwin and senior running back Tyler Wormhoudt. He twice returned kickoffs for touchdowns, including a 97-yard return of the opening kickoff at Ohio State.

Considered to be a top-five pick in the 2018 National Football League draft, Barkley finished second in the nation in all-purpose yards, averaging 179.5 yards per game, and 10 in kickoff returns with a 28.4-yard average.

Against Nevada three weeks ago, he scored on a rush, a kickoff return and a punt return. He helped lead Stanford to the Pac-12 North Division championship.
