Amazon Prime Video hits Apple TV

Amazon Prime Video arrives on Apple TV in over 100 countries

Almost six months after Amazon and Apple apparently settled their differences and announced the Prime Video app was coming to Apple TV, the actual app has finally been released.

As promised, Apple on Wednesday began rolling out the highly anticipated Amazon Prime Video app for Apple TV, which according to the official Prime Video for iOS release notes can be downloaded this morning as a standalone application for Apple's third-generation TV or newer.

As we approach the new year, Apple has two promises left to fulfill: the iMac Pro and Amazon Prime Video for Apple TV.

The appearance of a tvOS Prime Video app could be the first step in resolving a long-running feud between Apple and Amazon. Alternatively, you can opt to subscribe just to Amazon Prime Video for £5.99 a month.

It's also excellent news for Apple TV 4K owners as the addition of Amazon's streaming service means the library of 4K content available to them has increased significantly.

Separately, Amazon and Google are engaged in a spat over devices and content: Google blocked access to YouTube videos on Amazon's Echo Show device Tuesday, and said Amazon Fire TV users would be unable to access YouTube starting January 1. It was still possible to play Prime Video content on an Apple TV, but it required that you stream through AirPlay from another Apple device. The update also adds support for the iPhone X and Universal Search. Some have already speculated that Amazon will start selling Apple TVs on its site again.

"We are so pleased to welcome Amazon to Apple TV", Cook said on stage in June.

Amazon, for example does not carry Google Home, Chromecast or Nest devices.

"Echo Show and Fire TV now display a standard web view of and point customers directly to YouTube's existing website".

On the Apple TV 4K, the party gets really hot as the app fully supports 4K UHD playback as well as HDR.
