According to Josie Leavitt, Development Director at the Pride Center of Vermont, 30 transgender people have been murdered this year.

Participate in the Transgender Day of Remembrance by attending or organizing a vigil on November 20 to honor all those whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence this year.

TDOR was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998.

This year has been the deadliest on record in the United States for transgender people known to have been killed. WGME-TV reports organizers hold the event to raise awareness about the high rates of violence that transgender people face both in the United States and around the world.

People of color have disproportionately been the victims of these attacks.

Between 2013 and 2017, the states with the highest number of transgender deaths were California and Louisiana, at 10, the report also found; Texas had 9 deaths, and OH had 8.

Discrimination against transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary people is a regular feature, with this discrimination sadly increasing towards transgender children.

A similar report, published this year by LGBT+ group Stonewall, revealed that almost half of transgender children have attempted suicide.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) highlights the lives that often feel disposable, she says. In fact, 75 out of the 102 transgender people killed in the United States in the last five years were black or African-American. She says that's more than all of past year.
