Nitish faction is real JD(U), will get arrow symbol: EC

Janata Dal United's symbol war ends Election Commission awards arrow to Nitish Kumar

After losing the battle to claim the "arrow" symbol from the Nitish Kumar faction of the Janata Dal (U), senior Rajya Sabha member Sharad Yadav said on Saturday that his faction would fight the Gujarat polls under the symbol "autorickshaw" now assigned to Maheshbhai Vasava's Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP).

After hearing arguments from petitioner's lawyer, Kapil Sibal, and Nitish Kumar's lawyer, Rakesh Dwivedi; the EC authorized Kumar-led faction to use "Arrow" symbol.

The faction had approached the Election Commission on September 17, less than two months after Nitish dumped the Bihar's ruling grand alliance with Congress and RJD and joined hands with BJP to form a government.

Later, Nitish Kumar's group had also submitted the members' affidavits to the Commission in its support.

"Accordingly, JD (U) is hereby recognised as the Janata Dal (United) in terms of Paragraph-'15 of the Symbols Order", it added. JD (U) national general secretary Sanjay Jha on Friday accused the Congress of trying to repeatedly prop up Sharad Yadav against Nitish Kumar.

The decision is a huge setback for the faction led by Sharad Yadav who had moved the EC claiming that his group was the real JD (U) and that it should be given the right to contest polls using the "Arrow" symbol.

He later petitioned the EC seeking the Arrow symbol for itself. While Sharad faction is seeking to forge alliance with Congress, Nitish faction has made a decision to contest on its own. Nitish Kumar camp filed a counter submission in its favour.

Sharad said he was hopeful of finding a place for his followers from Gujarat in the Congress-led alliance that is being stitched up for the Assembly elections.
