Peru beats New Zealand and is last to qualify for World Cup

The national team of Peru in the play-offs was a New Zealand and received a ticket to Russia for the final stage of the world Cup

It was all to play for after a 0-0 draw in the first leg in New Zealand, but it was Peru who dominated on their home turf right from the off.

Peru are the final country to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, following on from Australia's victory over Honduras on Wednesday.

Peru got their noses in front on 27 minutes when Farfan hammered home a fierce rising shot from just inside the penalty area to complete a sweeping counter-attack.

Goals from Jefferson Farfan and Christian Ramos saw Peru past the All Whites 2-0 in Lima, securing a 2-0 aggregate triumph and place at Russian Federation 2018.

Peruvian players dedicated the win to striker Paolo Guerrero, who was suspended on doping suspicions.

It is the first time in 36 years that Peru has qualified for a World Cup tournament, with next year's event being held in Russian Federation. "From the bottom of my heart, this is for you, Paolo, as I had promised", the Lokomotiv Moscow forward said.

The draw for the World Cup finals will be on December 1 at the Kremlin in Moscow and groups will be formed with one team from each of the four pots. Before being banned, Guerrero scored six goals for Peru in South American qualifiers.

Peru finished fifth in the tough CONMEBOL qualifying, but were too good for Oceania champions New Zealand in the play-off.

"Mission accomplished, thank you", Gareca said, after goals from Jefferson Farfan and Christian Ramos gave Peru a historic victory. "He was very important for us at this turbulent moment", the Argentinian coach said. "All Peruvians should take this Thursday to celebrate as never before".

"Thanks to our warriors for giving us this joy", he wrote. "Let's celebrate with responsibility", he said.
