UNT students displaced after floor of apartment complex collapses during party

University of North Texas students who were celebrating homecoming in Denton ended the party with a - bang. About 50 residents haven't been able to return to their apartmentst.

The floor collapsed under the feet of dozens of party-goers inside a third-floor apartment at The Ridge at North Texas.

The floor of a Denton, Texas apartment unit caved in early Sunday morning under the weight of about 100 people, forcing about 50 residents out of their homes.

Denton Fire Captain Brian Glenn says the collapse likely broke pipes and plumbing and investigators were out Sunday afternoon analyzing the damage. Soon after, 911 calls started pouring in with reports of a roof collapse. The entire building where the collapse happened has been evacuated as crews inspect each unit. They're waiting to have structural engineers come in to verify that there's no structural damage that would cause a further building collapse.

Seven people were injured as Denton firefighters discovered partygoers on the third floor falling into their neighbors living room.

"They have parties quite a bit, nearly every weekend", Carley Carroll told NewsFix. The GoFundMe explains the police had previously contacted the residents of the apartment that collapsed to warn them of the potential risks of having so many people in the apartment.

NBC reported that two tenants drove to the police station to report the party - which was so loud the apartment shook.

"We chose to live here because the apartments are supposed to support you and help us find housing that should be the least they can do", said Carney.
