Sony could expand 'Spider-Man' universe with Morbius the Living Vampire spinoff

Morbius the Living Vampire Movie in Development at Sony

It's unclear if the new Morbius film would directly tie into Sony's Venom or the Black Cat and Silver Sable team-up movie.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Sharpless and Sazama have penned the script for the Spiderman spinoff Morbius, which was submitted to Sony in secret.

Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, Morbius first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101 as Dr. Michael Morbius.

While the character of Peter Parker is now shared between Sony and Marvel, Sony still owns the rights to Spider-Man and the superhero's stable of related characters.

After Sony and Marvel made history by deciding to share Spider-Man with the MCU, Sony has chose to move forward with Spider-Man spinoffs that are set outside of the cinematic universe. However, his experiments have tragic consequences as he becomes afflicted with classic vampire traits including fangs, the ability to fly and a thirst for blood which he needs to ingest to survive. Both writers are known for their most recent work on the Power Rangers film, and are now working on a Lost In Space reboot for Netflix.

On television, Morbius appeared in Spider-Man: The Animated Series voiced by Nick Jameson.
