Several children injured in stairwell collapse in Barrio Logan

21 Children 2 Adults Injured in Stairwell Collapse

Almost two dozen people were injured Saturday night when a wooden platform collapsed during a birthday party at a San Diego gym, officials said. The gym specializes in parkour, which is a sport that requires athletes to navigate obstacle courses. "Luckily I didn't get hurt". Three or four of the victims suffered spinal injuries when a 10-by-30-foot wooden platform collapsed on them, said San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Steve Wright.

"It could have been much worse", Wright said.

"It was a freak accident", Smith said.

"We are sad to report that we will be closed for the time being", the gym wrote on Facebook. "I️ am just as devastated for all the children affected as any other parent".

Joe Saari said when he and his wife dropped off their two children for a few hours there were 100 to 150 kids at the facility, a warehouse that includes trampolines and bouncy houses. Following the incident, one of their children called them up, and that is when they rushed back to the facility.

KSWB-TV said gym employee Patrick Minor posted a Snapchat video showing the aftermath of the collapse, including shattered glass and other materials on the ground. He says his 16-year-old daughter is still in the hospital with a broken pelvis and broken arm.

Scripps Mercy said most of the injured they treated had also been with released with two of their patients remaining in the hospital as of Sunday.

At Total Combat Paintball, which shares the facility with the gym, the day began as normal before the accident.

After the incident children were seen huddled in groups - some with their parents and guardians - outside the center, as emergency service vehicles lined the area.

Building inspectors are now working to determine how the stairwell collapsed.
