North Korean soldier defects to the South at Joint Security Area: JCS

President Trump attended several summits during his Asia tour

It was the first shooting in the Joint Security Area since 1984, but US and South Korean forces did not return fire.

South Korea has said the joint drill, due to finish on Tuesday, was in response to North Korean nuclear and missile provocations and to show any such developments by Pyongyang can be repelled with "overwhelming force".

The guards crawled toward him and took him to the back of Freedom House.

A doctor treating the soldier - who was airlifted to a hospital for emergency surgery - said he had been shot half-a-dozen times and sustained a serious stomach injury.

Officials in the North Korean government are reportedly "trying to figure out" if Donald Trump is "crazy" or if his increasingly provocative stance against the rogue state is "just an act", a U.S. negotiator with Pyongyang has said.

North Korea complained to the United Nations on Monday about joint military exercises by the United State and South Korea, describing it as "the worst ever situation" because USA nuclear war equipment had been deployed ready to strike.

Over the decades since the peninsula was divided, dozens of North Korean soldiers have fled to the South through the DMZ, which extends for two kilometers either side of the actual borderline. An estimated 1,000 people flee Kim Jong Un's volatile regime each year, but going through the DMZ - fortified with land mines, barbed wires and machine guns - have been extremely rare because of the unsafe conditions.

Rex Tillerson, the secretary of state, was photographed by North Korean soldiers while he stood inside one of the huts during a visit to the DMZ in March.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff official said he was found collapsed in a pile of fallen leaves and recovered by three South Korean soldiers crawling on their stomachs to his position.

South Korean forces have identified him only as "A" and said the man arrived in the country on Friday.

"He believes that after years of investigations, of tens of millions of taxpayer dollars, there is zero evidence of any ballot being impacted by Russian interference", Short said in an interview on NBC.

The defection came during escalated tensions between the North and the South and almost a week after President Trump visited Seoul for his five-country Asia tour.

Seo said the North Korean soldier appears to have been shot in five places, adding that he had his first operation on Monday.

The most famous incident was in 1976, when two American army officers were killed by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers. In September the North carried out its sixth and largest nuclear test, of what it described as a hydrogen bomb.

In 1984, North Korean and U.N. Command soldiers traded gunfire after a Soviet citizen defected by sprinting to the South Korean sector of the truce village.

"He then exited the vehicle and continued fleeing south across the line as he was sacked upon by other soldiers from North Korea", it said in a statement.
