"Mourinho held his development back", says Chelsea starlet's father

Gareth Southgate

For the many who derided Ruben Loftus-Cheek's maiden England call-up as ludicrously premature, the 21-year-old's spectacularly assured debut display against Germany in the 0-0 draw on Friday no doubt came as quite a shock.

"I just focus on myself, on getting better, on listening to Roy [Hodgson] and the coaches around me, the senior players around me and try to develop into the best player I can be".

The inference by those in the TV studio seemed to be that Chelsea were hindering his development rather than helping it, and that his eight games on loan at Crystal Palace - none of which have resulted in victory - had turned him from a prospect to a contender.

Newton added: "I have been very impressed".

Interim successor Guus Hiddink said he thought Chelsea's tall and physically imposing 19-year-old was 23 when he arrived, before starting him just four times in the remainder of the lost 2015-16 campaign. "There's fantastic potential and hopefully he keeps working hard to fulfil it". Sometimes it's easy as a young player when you get exposure for things to change, and it's hard to deal with.

'A lack of games held me back, definitely.

'He did everything that I know he can do, ' Southgate said.

"He's always trying to help".

He played just 22 times in the Premier League in three seasons with Chelsea, but only six of those games were starts.

Of the youthful trio, it was Loftus-Cheek who stood out from the crowd, putting in a man of the match performance and earning the plaudits from numerous supporters. And if they continue to shine for Crystal Palace, Swansea City and even England, then perhaps in 2017-18, Chelsea fans will finally see two of their own starring regularly in their own team's shirt.

'Room for improvement but I felt a really healthy performance'.

"And I'm still in contact with them. They're such nice people as well, so I thank them for everything".
