Eminem kicked off the MTV EMAs 2017 a short while ago with his first live performance of the new single.

Performers on the night included Eminem, who showcased new single Walk on Water, and Stormzy, who delivered his song Big for Your Boots from a police vehicle.

The 24-year-old singer took to the stage to perform his song "Strip That Down" at the annual award show on Sunday night (November 12) held at The SSE Arena, Wembley in London, England.

The Detroit rapper also took the award for "Best Hip Hop", an honour which he appeared to find slightly baffling. This incredible year in music has seen the return of Taylor Swift, to score six nominations, Shawn Mendes with five, and Ed Sheeran along with Kendrick Lamar nominated for four awards. "Holding Me Back" had already won the EMA for best song earlier in the evening, with Mendes thanking his "best friends, Teddy [Geiger], Scott [Harris] & Geoff [Warburton], for writing this song with me".

Irish rockers U2 were presented with a "Global Icon" award, in recognition of their decades at the top of the music industry.

The band played a concert at an MTV event in London's Trafalgar Square the previous evening, footage of which was shown in lieu of a performance.

Other winners included former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello in the best pop category, while Kendrick Lamar won the best video prize for his visuals to hit track Humble. Other highlights included Travis Scott rapping "Butterfly Effect" on top of an animatronic bird, United Kingdom hip-hop star Stormzy's "Big for Your Boots", and a new U2 song - "Get Out Of Your Own Way" - performed by Bono and company from Trafalgar Square.
