Investigation Continues into Gymnasium's Platform Collapse; 21 Children, 2 Adults Injured

At least 20 children injured in stairwell collapse in San Diego

More than 20 children were injured Saturday night when a stairway and platform collapsed at an indoor play center.

Vault PK specializes in parkour, a sport that requires athletes to complete obstacle courses often by launching themselves from structure to structure. "Luckily I didn't get hurt", he said. The other 17 children suffered minor injuries.

Two women, ages 72 and 46, were among the first to be taken to hospitals.

"It could have been much worse", he said. I am just as devastated for all the children affected as any other parent.

According to the San Diego Fire Department, the injuries were considered minor to moderate. However, an unidentified parent of one of the children who was not injured in the incident, said that the structure might have broken down because many children were running up and down from a loft to get pizza. "The platform these kids were going up was real sketchy, you could tell it wasn't going to hold all that weight", Brizendine said.

Firefighters said they join numerous parents in being grateful this wasn't much worse. The couple had headed back home to Chula Vista when one of their children called and said there had been an accident. One parent said he watched as about 40 kids ran up onto a wooden platform.

Staff from Total Combat Paintball, which shares the facility with the gym, rushed to provide assistance at the scene. "We are working with authorities and will continue to do so to resolve this", the statement continued.

An hour after the accident, the street around the warehouse was lined with ambulances and firetrucks, some leaving with apparent victims inside.

Monday, city inspectors were looking into what caused the collapse and whether the business had proper permits.
