Benzema demanded respect from Mourinho in hour-long showdown

Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign Karim Benzema for Manchester United – but ended up with Michael Owen

The Frenchman has scored a very respectable 182 goals in 377 Real Madrid games, but that's nearly nothing compared to Ronaldo's haul of 414 goals in 407 appearances.

The former England striker caused something of a stir by moving to Old Trafford on a free transfer from Newcastle that summer, with his ties to Liverpool dividing opinion among supporters of the North-West rivals.

Benzema has been at Madrid since 2009.

He has won La Liga twice, the Copa Del Rey twice also, the Champions League three times and the UEFA Super Cup three times, too.

With the Los Blancos facing the task of overturning an eight point deficit between themselves and Barcelona, it is imperative that Benzema finds his domestic form as quickly as possible.

The former striker told Canal+ that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to bring Benzema to Old Trafford and that he was second choice to the Frenchman. "Finally, it's good for the team".

"It's hard, especially in Spain, where sometimes you don't understand it", he admitted.

"They are normally there to boost you".

But he has hardly been missed by Deschamps, who guided France to the final of Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

"It's complicated, I'm not stupid but I want to win something with my country", he confirmed. It's been more than two and a half years, it doesn't take much to understand what is going on.

"As long as [Didier] Deschamps is the manager of the team, I won't be given an opportunity to return to the national side".

"That's our news. On a personal level, the players I selected deserve a minimum of respect". He is someone who I respect, but he showed me a lot of respect before and after he turned his back on me.
