Three-Carrier Show of Force Sails Off Korean Peninsula

US aircraft carriers

Three US naval aircraft carriers are making a beeline to the same destination to partake in an unusual military drill not seen for nearly a decade.

For the first time in a decade, three U.S. Navy carriers are in the same place at the same time for a series of exercises in the Western Pacific. This is the first time that three carrier strike groups have operated together in the Western Pacific since exercises Valiant Shield 2006 and 2007 off the coast of Guam.

Both operations focused on the capacity to quickly unite forces from three strike force groups because of national circumstances.

USA warships USS Nimitz, the Ronald Reagan, the Theodore Roosevelt including South Korean naval vessels were involved in the exercise amid tensions in North Korea.

The United States and South Korea on Saturday started joint naval exercises that will involve three USA aircraft carriers in what military officials describe as a clear warning to North Korea.

The exercise involves the Roosevelt, USS Ronald Reagan and USS Nimitz and includes air defense drills, sea surveillance, replenishments at sea, defensive air combat training, close-in coordinated maneuvers and other training, Navy officials said.

The carriers are required to meet up in the Sea of Japan during the week off the Korean Peninsula, according to a U.S. defense official. "Pacific Fleet's unique ability and ironclad commitment to the continued security and stability of the region". The U.S. carriers will also participate in separate exercises with three Japanese destroyers on Sunday, according to Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force.

Bloomberg reported in October that the USS Nimitz and its strike group had roamed the Indian Ocean before moving into the Pacific after operating in the Middle East.

"North Korean news outlets described the carriers" presence as a provocation, and officials in Pyongyang told CNN that they are concerned that Trump intends to start a conflict.

However, Pyongyangs state news agency accused the USA and South Korea of attempting to escalate tensions in the region.
