Switzerland are awarded a penalty after an alleged handball by Corry Evans at Windsor Park

Switzerland have qualified for the Federation Internationale de Football Association 2018 World Cup after playing a 0-0 draw against visiting Northern Ireland in the second leg of the European play-off on Sunday.

That suited the Swiss just fine after their 1-0 win on Thursday in Belfast, and 0-0 draw was enough to see Switzerland punch their ticket to Russian Federation 2018.

However, in the end, Northern Ireland would see their hopes of a place in Russian Federation next summer dashed by that one, dodgy penalty.

This is Switzerland's fourth consecutive World Cup, and they've made the knockout stage in two of the last three.

"I haven't given it any thought", he told Sky Sports. We were the better team.

He almost forced extra time with a header, but Ricardo Rodriguez came up with a heroic clearance to seal Switzerland's place in the World Cup. Our performance and reaction [in the second leg] was fabulous.

We will stick together as it's a great bunch of lads and it is a pleasure to play for Northern Ireland.

After the first leg on Thursday, the shocking penalty decision was the main talking point for obvious reasons, but following close behind was the work of Gerry Armstrong.

"The message is loud and clear from the players and fans that we would like Michael to stay as we can achieve great things with this squad".

It felt like the end of an era in Basel on Sunday, where at least four veteran players - Aaron Hughes, Gareth McAuley, Chris Brunt and Jamie Ward - may have pulled on the green jersey for the final time. "Those players will be remembered for the performance".
