Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jordan Pickford head 'real positives' for England

Southgate singles out pair for praise after England draw

Gareth Southgate hailed the "really encouraging" performance of his England team after their 0-0 draw with Germany and praised debutants Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jordan Pickford.

However, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes Chelsea made a mistake in loaning Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Crystal Palace as he is better than Bakayoko, who was signed in a £40m deal from Monaco this summer.

However, Loftus-Cheek has indicated that he is keen to keep his feet on the ground given his lack of experience on the domestic scene. I think it was a very tactical game. It was good for us young players and I certainly learned a lot.

Loftus-Cheek added: "The manager has said do your best". I had Gareth for three years in Under-21s, so it wasn't too much of a new thing coming here.

"I'm really not surprised with what they've done because they've shown that previously in younger ages and in the week in training, there's been an energy about the group".

After both teams qualified for the World Cup relatively easily, the match was fairly wide open. "There's a chance, but I have to keep learning and keep getting better".

England's most inexperienced team for 36 years - 101 caps in the starting line-up - fought back after a shaky start, with Loftus- Cheek, who has made only 29 Premier League appearances, outstanding on his senior debut.

"He will gain huge confidence from it".

"I think we have to be courageous and put some of these boys in because we think they're capable".

"He did everything I know he can do", Southgate told ITV.

So when an England No 10 playing his first senior global drags the ball back through Leroy Sané's legs to get himself out of a tight spot, then flicks...

"It took him some time to realise that he's okay here and can play".

Then he woke up and chose to give Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn a call to replace Jack Butland.

"We'll see whether Phil [Jones] stays with us, definitely Angus [Gunn] following the injury to Jack [Butland]", Southgate confirmed when asked which players could be promoted for Tuesday's clash with Brazil.
