Almost two dozen people including 21 children were injured in an accident on Saturday when a wooden platform at a California gymnasium suddenly collapsed.

The collapse happened just after 8 p.m. PT at Vault PK when a large group of kids climbed up on a platform and the whole structure collapsed, injuring those on the platform and underneath it, according to San Diego ABC affiliate KGTV. All other children were transported to various San Diego hospitals with minor to moderate injuries.

Parents at the scene said about 50 children were expected to attend the event, but more than twice as many were present.

One parent who did not provide his name said the stairwell collapsed while many children were running up and down from a loft to get pizza. Seventeen children were taken to hospitals to be treated for minor injuries.

There could be other children injured whose parents took them to hospitals, he said. Vault PK specializes in parkour, a physically demanding sport that requires athletes to navigate military-style obstacle courses. Smith said that the "freak accident" could have been avoided if the structure was built to hold the weight of a larger crowd.

The accident occurred during an open gym night for ages 5 to 14, according to the gym's website. The couple were heading back home to Chula Vista when one of their children called and said there had been an accident.

He said fell onto a young girl during the chaos, but neither were seriously hurt. "We are working with authorities and will continue to do so to resolve this".
