3 takeaways from win over Rutgers in Week 11

Rutgers: 'I think this loss will sting more' after tasting victory

Penn State plays Nebraska next Saturday in its home finale, which also could be Barkley's final game at Beaver Stadium, should he leave early for the NFL.

Being strong in both the offensive and defensive line is what can limit blowout losses that plagued Rutgers last season.

And no, it wasn't Saquon Barkley.

In fact, this is the first time all season that any team that has held the No. 1 spot has received all 64 votes. Last year, two college running backs (Stanford's Christian McCaffrey and LSU's Leonard Fournette) chose not to play in their respective bowl games.

By any statistical measure, Rutgers has the worst wide receiver corps in the Big Ten.

Rutgers can't throw the ball. It continued into the first quarter before the Lions' roster advantages kicked in.

McSorley gathered some of the offensive leaders on the sideline for a message. "We just have to continue helping the young guys get open and that's what it is". He led the Nittany Lions not just in passing yards, but with 44 on the ground in an efficient effort.

So, even though the Scarlet Knights had outplayed PSU for the first 20 minutes, the Lions had the lead.

Penn State sold out its season ticket allotment ahead of the 2017 season after selling more than 9,000 new packages following the 2016 season. Quarterback Gio Rescigno completed only seven of 20 passes for 43 yards. "Obviously I'm aware of what teams are going to try and do and teams are going to try to take away our run game and take away our backs". Barkley capped the drive with a 4-yard run. In turn it's not incredibly unreasonable to think Barkley might opt to skip the Nittany Lions' bowl game.

"Their skill players were the difference in the game, including him", Rutgers coach Chris Ash said.

Other than that play, though, Barkley was primarily a decoy in the offense, while McSorley was the catalyst.

"Yeah, definitely", he said.

McSorley hasn't gotten the Heisman hype that Barkley has received, which is one of the freakish things about college football. I'm not even anxious about that or focused on that.

Barkley said the subject is "not really on (my) mind", adding he would address it with his family after the season.

"As a high school kid, when you come to a place like this, you come here to compete, and yeah, you dream of having that success, and that's kind of the vision you have", McSorley said. "I visualized going undefeated".

"You come here as a competitor to be great and hopefully be able to win games and have those big numbers". The PSU defense held, and Andrew Harte kicked a 33-yard field goal with 12:48 left in the first.

Receiver Juwan Johnson played his most physical game in terms of yards after catch, with three receptions of 17 yards or longer.

And if the Rutgers offensive line was any proof of that, the Scarlet Knights would have a much better record than its 4-6 mark. Rutgers made its sixth first down of the game on the fourth play of the second quarter, but didn't pick up its seventh until just under 6 minutes remained in the fourth quarter.
