Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland: 'Chicago' Star Cast for Biopic

Final months Judy in London on December 31 1968 the film will focus on her life at this time

Renée Zellweger will strap on her dancing shoes, a wig, and a sequined caftan to star in Judy, a film about Judy Garland's final concerts in London.

Written by Tom Edge, who is known for penning The Crown, the biopic will focus on the past year of Garland's life, specifically, her performances in London in the winter of 1968.

True Story's Rupert Goold will direct the film based on a script by The Crown's Tom Edge. Fragile but determined, the singer "battles with management, charms musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans", the companies said, and continues her romance with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband.

Judy Garland was just 47 when she died of an overdose in 1969.

Though Zellweger has never been on Broadway, she did play Roxie Hart in the 2002 film adaptation of Chicago, earning a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance.

Pathe and Calamity Films are behind Judy and principal photography is set for next February, in London.

Renée Zellweger will play Judy in the movie which is likely to feature some of the most iconic songs from Judy's catalogue. In July she joined the cast of Sarah Jessica Parker's upcoming drama of a NY jazz vocalist facing devastating news, "Best Day of My Life". She will next be seen in the drama SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME, hitting theaters this Friday.
