Eight die in TN bus stand roof collapse

The incident took place at the Porayar branch of the TNSTC around 3.30 am.

The collapsed building was constructed in 1952.

Three people Sustained injuries and were rescued from the debris.

At least eight employees of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) died after the roof of a rest room at the Porayar bus depot collapsed early on Friday. The building was at least 60 years old and belonged to TNSTC. Shocked district police officers told DC that the deceased and the injured were drivers and conductors and were fast asleep after their overnight duty when the awful roof crash occurred in the old building.

According to the Newspaper, Three other TNSTC employees identified as Venkatesan, Senthil and Premkumar were rescued by the Thanrangambadi fire service station personnel and sent to the Karaikal GH for treatment.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had also declared a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh for those who were injured severely and Rs. 50,000 for those victims with minor injuries. He also announced a government job for one person from the family of each of the eight drivers and conductors.

District Administrator C. Suresh Kumar is inquiring into the cause of the building collapse.
