Mufti Qavi arrested from Punjab Highway

Mufti Abdul Qavi fled the scene for dismissing his bail plea

Mufti Abdul Qavi, a suspect in the murder of social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch, was arrested on Wednesday after he fled a district and sessions court hearing in Multan.

Entrusting the honourable court for justice, Qavi said that he had no connection with the murder. Upon his lawyer's request, the court had adjourned the hearing of the case till October 18 (today).

The judge later rejected the application for extension in the cleric's pre-arrest bail.

Mufti Qavi has been nominated in Qandeel murder case.

Mufti Abdul Qavi was arrested after the local court rejected his bail request, Fahad Ahmed, a local police officer in Multan city, told Anadolu Agency over the phone. Mufti Qavi managed to flee the court but later in the day was arrested on the highway from Multan to Jhang.

She said that Mufti Qavi had been persuading her since quite some time to meet, adding that the religious scholar had publicly professed his likeness for her. She was silenced in July a year ago by her own brother who strangled her to death over so-called honour.

Soon after, raids have been conducted to arrest Mufti Qavi.

Model and actress Qandeel Baloch was found strangled to death in her house in Multan's Karimabad area on July 16, 2016. Her brother confessed to the crime and admitted to killing Qandeel for "honour". Her father claimed that she was killed by her younger brother, Waseem, in the name of honour.

Qandeel Baloch rose to fame over her Facebook videos, in which she danced, proposed to politicians and brought the cleric to shame.

"Qavi will not be allowed to attend meetings of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee and National Ulema Mushaikh Council until further orders".
