Colorado Springs teen accused of killing young siblings scheduled for court Wednesday

Colorado's 2 kids stabbed to death

A 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old girl were stabbed to death in Colorado Springs early Tuesday morning.

Colorado Springs police arrested a 23-year-old accused burglar on felony assault and criminal mischief charges after the suspect lost a foot chase, kicked one officer in the head and smacked another in the face.

The two young siblings died at the hospital.

Malik Murphy had been arrested in Effingham in March and accused of setting fire to his parents' sport utility vehicle.

Reports say that the woman's roommate fired two shots at the 27-year-old and her child while they slept.

The suspect then left the room and fatally shot himself, according to police. He said the teen had previously talked about killing his family.

An Illinois attorney and arrest records have indicated Murphy has been struggling with severe mental health issues.

Barnes said the victims were the youngest of Jefferson Murphy's five children, and Malik Murphy was the oldest.

Murphy was arrested in IL in March after reportedly driving his parents' SUV there and setting it on fire. He was ordered to seek mental health treatment and take all of his medication.
