Airtel launches "Online Store", offers iPhone 7 at Rs 7777

The iPhone 7 (32GB) is available at a down payment of Rs7,777 and 24 monthly installments of Rs2,499.

Airtel's latest effort is also similar, but with the aim of retaining its high-end users by entering into multi-year contracts with them.

Apart from this, Airtel is also offering physical damage and cyber protection under Airtel's secure package. The Airtel Online Store will offer a range of premium smartphones with affordable down payments, instant credit verification and financing, and bundled monthly plans, the company says.

"Not only are we making it easier for millions of customers to upgrade to devices they always wanted, we are also making the entire process seamless and simple through digital technologies", Harmeen Mehta, Global CIO at Bharti Airtel, said in the statement. That's a lot to ask, especially when taking into account the fact that the 32GB iPhone 7 is priced at Rs 49000 officially and Rs 38999 through Flipkart and Amazon India. "A device bundled with exciting data offers can ensure that a customer doesn't look for other telecom operators". In the long run, these deals will turn out to be worse for the consumer. In the United States of America, consumers pay a one-time downpayment fee of $100-$200 and then a monthly fee for a two-year period. Let's break it down then using just the iPhone 7 32GB model. Clearly, these amounts are much less than the Rs 2,499 offer. Deducting that from the monthly installment leaves us with paying Rs 1,850 every month as an instalment for the phone over and above the initial downpayment. These smartphone would come with bundled plans from Airtel.

But in this case the latter part is true - the service provider would be able to retain the customer with a fixed ARPU - Rs 832, and for a longer period - 24 months, whereas the customer is at loss. You can see the down payment price of all models here. The major difference in the offers is in the plan that Airtel is offering. The EMI has been fixed as Rs 2,499 per month for 24 months.

Along with this, the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus is sure to bring down the price of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in the coming months.

The offer sounds good and lucrative who wants to won an iPhone but not are ready to make an upfront payment to buy the phone.
