Modi flays Congress, assures traders on GST in Gandhinagar: Key highlights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi being felicitated at a public meeting in his hometown Vadnagar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Monday visit his home state Gujarat to address a gathering at the "Gujarat Gaurav Mahasammelan" ahead of Assembly Elections in the states. "In fact, they are now abusing "vikaas", the PM said. He said, as promised, his government reviewed the way the new indirect tax regime was working after three months following which several changes were made to fulfil their demands. The PM alleged that the Congress harboured "dwesh" (malice) towards Gujarat and Gujaratis as Rahul and his party colleagues often criticise Modi and the BJP. In fact, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh is on record saying that Modi was single-handedly [responsible for] derailing the GST. The prime minister said the Congress was spreading misinformation. "Now see, where I am and where are they (Congress)".

Modi also touched upon the issue of GST stating that the BJP alone is not responsible for its existence.

The value of declared assets of the Bharatiya Janata Party has increased from Rs 122.93 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 893.88 crore in 2015-16 while that of Congress has risen from Rs 167.35 crore to Rs 758.79 crore, according to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Election Watch.

He also tried to assuage the concerns of the trading community about penal action they might face for their past accounting. "This is being put before the GST (Council) and discussed collectively", he said.

He said the central government was "only the 30th part" in the decision which was taken in consultation with 29 states. When Modi was Chief Minister, we got 127 seats. It no longer has the heart of a big, national party but of a petty, marginal player."It was also ironical that Modi, who as the Opposition leader until 2013, had vehemently opposed GST and had prevented the previous UPA government from taking it up as a formal legislative exercise in Parliament, was blaming the Congress for the poor implementation of the "transformational" indirect tax law. Gujarat has been an eyesore for the party and the family". How they treated Morarji Desai? They did not speak about the work of Morarji Desai or his dedication and commitment to Mahatma Gandhi's ideals.

He said, "They did not even complete Sardar Sarovar project".
