Indonesian goalkeeper Choirul Huda died following an on-pitch collision with a teammate on Sunday.

"Huda was conscious and complained of chest pain before passing out", said a medical officer as quoted by Indonesian newsportal Surya in the New Straits Times report.

Video footage of the event showed Huda slamming into team mate Ramon Rodrigues in the 43rd minute of the game in the Go-Jek Traveloka league.

However, things turned critical and Huda was rushed to the Dr Soegiri Lamongan General Hospital in Lamongan where he was declared dead at 5.15pm local time in the company of his teammates.

As per a statement on the official Persela website, Dr Yudistiro Andri Nugroho described the incident as a "traumatic collision", with the initial analysis being that there was a "possibility of "chest, head and neck trauma" due to the blow to the chest and lower jaw".

The collision caused Huda to stop breathing and resulted in a cardiac arrest.

In his 18-year professional career, Choirul played only for his favorite Persela. And According to the team's Instagram page, the club will retire the number one jersey worn by Huda.

He died at a hospital when Persela won the match 2-0. His club have led tributes to their fallen goalkeeper, referring to him as "the real legend of Persela".
