Vauxhall is cutting 400 jobs at one of its United Kingdom plants

Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant will see 400 jobs cut as the British marque's new owner, PSA Group, moves production of the Vauxhall Astra from two shifts to one early in 2018.

Spent this summer in fold of PSA group, Vauxhall automobile brand, which has almost 5 000 direct employees in United Kingdom, wants to launch a plan of 400 voluntary departures in one of its factories in United Kingdom, said Friday 13 October a spokesperson for French manufacturer at Agence France Presse.

"Vauxhall needs to adjust production volumes at its Ellesmere Port production facility to the current level of demand and to improve its performance, in order to protect its future", the company said.

Claire Perry promised that the Government was "standing by to do all it can to support those affected" by the proposals to axe jobs at the firm's Ellesmere Port factory by the end of the year.

The spokesman on Friday said PSA would be in a position to consider future investments once it has visibility on Britain's future trading relationship with the European Union and once the plant's competitiveness has been addressed.

Fears over redundancies began in March, when it was first announced that Vauxhall was to be sold to PSA.

However, PSA made clear that future investments in the plant were on hold until negotiations on the UK's future with the European Union had become clearer.

PSA boss Carlos Tavares had previously assured the United Kingdom government and Unite union that jobs would be protected and production at Ellesmere would be assured until at least 2021.

Union officials described the announcement as a "huge loss" to the region, which has happened just days after cuts were announced at BAE systems, which has many bases throughout the North West.

She told the Commons that she had spoken to the general secretary of the Unite union and the chief executive of Vauxhall UK, as well as local government leaders.

About 400 of the 1,800 jobs at the site are expected to go by Christmas, largely via voluntary redundancies, as demand for the Astra continues to slip in favour of chunkier and trendier SUVs.
