The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday attempted to distance itself from Sangeet Som's comments on the Taj Mahal, dubbing them as his "individual opinion".

He continued, that the iconic Taj Mahal should have no place in Indian history since it was built by traitors. "It's lovely heritage. I oppose the Mughals who built it and how they've been portrayed in history", said the legislator from Uttar Pradesh.

Som, earlier in the day, drew flak for stating that the iconic Taj Mahal was built by traitors and hence, can not be included in the Indian history.

According to Press Information Bureau's 2013-14 report, Taj Mahal topped the list of the highest earning places in India's tourism list and attracts millions of tourists every year.

Controversy was created recently when Taj Mahal was removed from a Uttar Pradesh tourism booklet.

Sangeet Som added that one should not get disappointed by the UP government's decision to not include Agra's Taj Mahal in its official tourism booklet. What place's history? Whose history?

However, it was Aurangzeb who imprisoned his father and Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, till the end of his days. He wanted to wipe out all Hindus from India.

On Sunday, the BJP legislator from Sardhana sparked fresh controversy after terming Mughal emperors Babur, Akbar and Aurangzeb as "traitors". "Do you call it history when he targeted many Hindus in UP and Hindustan?"

"Taj Mahal is such a non issue but politicians will continue to try and divide this country aur yaha twitter pe hum RW LW khelte rahe hai".

It was earlier reported that the Taj Mahal, which is one of the seven wonders of the world, was not mentioned in a new booklet released by the Yogi Adityanath-led state government.

Taj Mahal is declared as the major tourist destination in the country by the UP government.

He is known for making provocative statements and actions on issues such as the Dadri lynching and the Muzaffarnagar riots.

"Traitors" also build Red Fort will Modi stop hoisting Tiranga? Calling it a big joke, Khalid Rashid said that such comments were aimed at vitiating the communal atmosphere and dividing the society.
