Netherlands join England, Germany and Spain in top Nations League division

The Netherlands' 2-0 win over Sweden in their final game in World Cup qualifying Group D took them above Wales, into 12th place in UEFA's co-efficient rankings, to claim the final place in League A.

Uefa say that the new worldwide league "creates more meaningful and competitive matches for teams and..."

UEFA have also confirmed that Nations League games will stand as "competitive" replacements for worldwide friendlies, but not as a replacement for the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign, which will now begin in March 2019 and end in November 2019.

The four leagues for the inaugural UEFA Nations League have been confirmed, with Croatia in League A with the likes of Germany, Spain, France, Portugal, and England.

To full list of Leagues are available on the UEFA website. It has promotion, relegation, back-door routes into major finals and - as part of the qualifying process for all future World Cups and European Championships - it's here to stay.

But, the pots have now been worked out which means it is possible that the Boys in Green could draw Wales and Northern Ireland, bringing back memories of the Carling Nations Cup in 2011.

Also in League B are Northern Ireland's recent group foes the Czech Republic, as well as potential World Cup play-off opponents Denmark and the hosts of next year's finals Russian Federation.

Teams will play the other two sides in their groups home and away to determine the final standings in each group.

Euro 2020 qualification will begin after the group stages of the Nations League concludes and will run throughout 2019, with the play-offs taking place the following Spring.

League D: Azerbaijan, FYR Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Liechtenstein, Malta, Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino and Gibraltar.

UEFA say the Nations League "creates more meaningful and competitive matches for teams and a dedicated calendar and structure for national team football".

The UEFA Nations League will provide teams with another chance to qualify for the UEFA EURO final tournament, with four sides qualifying through play-off matches which take place in March 2020.
