J&K: 2 Garud commandos martyred, 2 terrorists killed in Bandipora's Hajin

Bandipora encounter Gunbattle between security forces and terrorists is underway in Hajin Handipora of Jammu and Kashmir

Bandipore: In a fierce shootout between government forces and the militants during wee hours on Wednesday in Hajin area of North Kashmir's Bandipore district two two Air Force commandos and an equal number of militants were killed.

Terming the encounter to be an intense operation, the defence spokesman said that the gunfight between the security forces and the terrorists took place in the Hajin area. The militants opened fire on the security forces, triggering a gun battle, he added.

The deceased commandos have been identified as Cpl Neelesh Nayan (31) from Sakri town in Nashik, Maharashtra; and Sgt Milind Kishor (33) from Udhadih village of Bhagalpur district in Bihar.

In 1990, at least four air force officers were killed in an ambush by militants in Sannat Nagar of Srinagar, but they were not participating in any operation. Two army jawans were also injured in the encounter and shifted to 92 base hospital for further treatment, The Indian Expressquoted Director General of Press Information Bureau, KS Dhatwalia, as saying. Two militants, too, were killed in the encounter, and officials believe they belonged to terror outfit Lashkar-e- Toiba (LeT).

It was for the first time that IAF personnel were killed in anti-militancy operation.

The Garud commandos are trained along the lines of Navy's MARCOS and Army's para commandos.

The Indian Air Force commandoes were working with the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir police for operational experience and training.

The two militants killed were identified as Nasrullah Mir alias Anna, a local LeT man, and Ali Bai alias Maaz alias Abu Bakker, a Pakistani active in Hajin area.

"Vigil has been stepped up across all regions of North Kashmir".

Of the total, 14,000 were civilians, 5,000 members of the security forces and 22,000 militiamen, it said.
