The 44-year-old, who has become an outspoken advocate for women in Hollywood, posted on Instagram late last night that her account had been taken offline: "TWITTER HAS SUSPENDED ME".

"We have determined this account violated the Twitter Rules, so we've temporarily limited some of your account features", the message from the social media company read. Since the allegations against Weinstein came to light, McGowan has called out many other Hollywood insiders, including Ben Affleck.

McGowan has also been vocal about Ben Affleck, telling the Argo actor and director to "f- off" in tweet. Twitter provided no specific instances of her rule violation but stated that she can delete the tweets that violate its rules to gain access to her account more quickly.

Weinstein was forced out of his company after several women came forward alleging he had harassed them and acted inappropriately.

A Twitter spokesperson said only, "We don't comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons".

Twitter says that Rose McGowan's account was suspended because of a tweet that included a phone number and has announced that the actress's account is now unlocked.

What did McGowan tweet that got her in trouble with Twitter?

Twitter also apologized for the confusion and it insisted that it supports McGowan and other sexual assault survivors' use of the platform to speak out. "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices".

Actress Hilarie Burton has alleged that Ben Affleck groped her during a TV interview when she was younger.

Burton went on to address the incident, tweeting, "I was a kid".

According to Paltrow, the incident occurred when she was 22 and had just been cast as the lead in Jane Austen's Emma, produced by Weinstein.

Twitter was sharply criticized for the banning of McGowan's account, with many users accusing the website of taking Weinstein's side. He was sacked from The Weinstein Company, the film company he founded, on Monday over the allegations.
