Nationals' Gio Gonzalez to start Game 5 vs. Cubs

Chicago Cubs' Anthony Rizzo hits an RBI single during the eighth inning of Game 3 of the National League Division Series baseball game against the Washington Nationals Monday Oct. 9 2017 in Chicago

Chicago Cubs outfielder Albert Almora is getting the start in center field for Thursday's Game against the Washington Nationals.

The Cubs scored three runs in five innings against Gonzalez on home runs by Willson Contreras and Anthony Rizzo, but the Nationals scored five times in the eighth for a 6-3 win.

The day began with a bit of a curveball, with manager Dusty Baker announcing that Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg would start the game, despite saying earlier that Tanner Roark would start.

But later, Nationals officials clarified that Baker misspoke and that Strasburg actually threw his bullpen Monday ahead of Game 3, the Washington Post reported.

Imagine watching your favorite baseball team head to the National League Championship Series after defeating last seasons World Series Champions - and then being stranded without a way to get home.

Roark will start Game 4 of the NLDS against the Cubs on Wednesday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. While Gonzalez hasn't pitched out of the bullpen since 2009, Roark has considerable experience in relief. Roark's last outing was out of the bullpen in Washington's regular season finale October 1.

By going with Gonzalez, the Nationals could force Cubs Manager Joe Maddon to make hard decisions.

The pitching matchup for Game 4 hasn't changed because of the postponement.
