Alexis Sanchez is the David Beckham of Chile, says Arsene Wenger

Arsenal contract rebels Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil could yet leave the club in the January transfer window, as there are no discussions planned with the pair over their future.

The Gunners ace will be out of contract next summer and is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with any club from January of next year. They've been embroiled in a contract saga with their reported demands not being met.

When asked to confirm reports negotiations with Ozil's agent were progressing "positively", Wenger said: "That is my understanding".

Wenger likened the pressure on his star player to the hype that used to surround Beckham, who became England's villain for his red card at the 1998 World Cup before going on to lead the national team as captain.

When asked whether he would contemplate a January sale, Wenger said: "Once you're in our kind of situation, you envisage every solution, yes".

Wenger, also referencing Chile star Sanchez, said: "Yes, that is a fair assessment".

"Both players look happy and, overall, I hope the situation can be turned round, but at the moment we are not close enough to announce anything".

In the short term, Sanchez has to deal with the disappointment of Chile's failure to qualify for the World Cup, following their 3-0 midweek loss in Brazil.

However, Wenger said he had no fears that Sanchez will down tools completely. "Mentally I will have to assess the situation when he comes back tomorrow".

Sanchez scored 24 times in 37 games in the Premier League last season to underline his undoubted talent despite a controversial season for the South American.

"If he keeps going like he's going at the moment, he will go to the World Cup, I'm sure. I will always appreciate him and I will always wish him the best wherever he goes". Watford play good football.
