Nigerian national relentlessly thrashed in Delhi alleging theft, use of drugs

A Nigerian national in Delhi was tied to a lamp post and was relentlessly thrashed with sticks by a mob which accused him of being a drug addict and a theft

A day after a video of a Nigerian man being beaten up by a mob in Malviya Nagar surfaced, police have arrested four more persons in connection with the case. Reportedly, the complaint to the police claimed that the thrashed Nigerian national was involved in a theft attempt and he had been injured after a fall from the stairs. "We have registered a case and arrested one person". Not only were the Nigerian students arrested, they were also assaulted by an angry mob - making a mockery of law and order.

The crowd tied him to the lamp post and beat him with sticks.

After the brutal assault, the Nigerian, who was wounded and unconscious with injuries to his head, face, limbs and back, was arrested by the police and charged before a court which sent him to jail.

Krishna Kumar (54), a resident of Savitri Nagar, claimed the man broke into his house and tried to steal valuables, police said. He kept begging, but the mob did not stop.

According to sources, the incident happened two weeks ago, the suspected thief was caught in the early hours of September 24 inside the house of a resident in an area populated by African Students.

According to Malviya Nagar police, the incident occurred on September 24 and a case of attempted burglary was registered against the Nigerian national.

The recent incidents of violence against Africans across Delhi-NCR have already grabbed the headlines.

A police officer said they have identified a few more people, including the person who recorded the video. But no one knew until the video emerged that he had been assaulted.
