"The values of Scouting - trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind, fearless and reverent for example - are important for both young men and women".

In making the decision, BSA released a questionnaire to parents regarding after-school activities and the response was overwhelming: 90 percent of parents surveyed expressed interest in signing up their daughters for a program like Cub Scouts and 87 percent were interested in programs similar to Boy Scouts.

Effective in the 2018 program year, existing "packs" can either choose to establish a new girl pack, establish a pack that consists of girl dens and boy dens, or remain an all-boy pack.

Additionally, the BSA will establish a program for older girls, announced in 2018 and likely available in 2019, that will allow them to reach the coveted Eagle Scout status. More details about a program for older girls, which will the same curriculum as the boys program, will be announced next year.

Both organizations have been rocked by a steady decline in membership. Earlier this year, Girl Scouts USA reported 1.5 million youth members.
