African man tied to pole, thrashed in Delhi

A Nigerian national in Delhi was tied to a lamp post and was relentlessly thrashed with sticks by a mob which accused him of being a drug addict and a theft

A day after a video of a Nigerian man being beaten up by a mob in Malviya Nagar surfaced, police have arrested four more persons in connection with the case.

In the video, the Nigerian is seen with his feet tied to a lamp post, begging for mercy as his attackers keep hitting him with sticks.

The DCP said police were alerted about a theft in Savitri Nagar, near Malviya Nagar, on the intervening night of September 23-24 and an African man was handed to the team that reached there soon after. According to police, the accused has identified himself as Ahmad. The Nigerian national was arrested by the police after a complaint of theft was filed against him by a resident of the area.

Nigerian national Ahmad (27) had allegedly entered Mr. Kumar's house to commit burglary on September 24. The police reached the location and took custody of the Nigerian national. The Hindu reported that the locals produced three videos, all showing Ahmad comitting crimes at different times.

The people who caught him told the police that the Nigerian man fell down while he was trying to flee by crossing the fence.

In the video the man can be seen tied to a pole and being assaulted by his neighbours.

Earlier this year, after attacks targeting Africans in Delhi and nearby, envoys described the attacks as "xenophobic and racial". But no one knew until the video emerged that he had been assaulted. Ahmed was also questioned about being beaten up but he did not mention anything about the incident, police said. No one has the right to beat him, even if there were allegations.
