US flies stealth fighter bombers over Korean peninsula

USA air force commanders often launch flights of their most lethal warplanes at time of heightened tension with North Korea.

The PM made the comments to a group of investors at the New York Stock Exchange, ahead of an address at the United Nations General Assembly.

Spain has given the North Korean ambassador assigned to Madrid until the end of September to leave, becoming the fourth country this month to expel Pyongyang's representative in the wake of the regime's sixth nuclear test.

That resolution, number 2321, required member states to reduce the number of staff at North Korea diplomatic missions and consular posts and limit the number of bank accounts to one per diplomatic mission and one per diplomat.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Defense Secretary James Mattis said North Korea is "intentionally doing provocations that seem to press against the envelope for just how far can they push without going over some kind of a line in their minds that would make them vulnerable".

Konstantin Asmolov, with the Center for Korean Studies at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES) of the Russian Academy of Science, said that the United States did not want to launch negotiations on North Korea's nuclear status as it may be a "bad example" for other countries.

Trump made the announcement Thursday during a working luncheon with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The United States had been leading efforts to punish the regime for its repeated missile launches this year, which Pyongyang says are part of an effort to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile aimed at reaching the U.S. mainland.

Kuwait also said it would stop issuing visas to North Korean passport holders.

In light of the threat from North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile development, a key theme at this year's U.N. General Assembly, Abe told reporters he and Trump also confirmed in their meeting "the unwavering US commitment to the defense of Japan and the fact that Japan and the United States are with each other 100 percent".

Trump says he has not ruled out a military option in the crisis. Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, responding to Trump's bellicose speech, called for dialogue in tandem with implementation of sanctions.

Following the test, the UN Security Council adopted new sanctions against the North, a move that Pyongyang warned would not go unanswered.

Trump's National Security Advisor HR McMaster said the U.S. would "have to prepare all options" if sanctions prove insufficient to stop the North's weapons drive.

The president also said that the US and South Korea were working on improving trade agreements though that was less important than addressing the North Korea threat.

But these efforts have intensified following North Korea's huge nuclear test on Sept 3, which experts say appears to have been the detonation of a hydrogen bomb, as Pyongyang claimed, rather than the relatively smaller atomic bombs it had previously exploded.

"If we are forced to defend ourselves and our allies, we will do so with military power that is effective and overwhelming", Pence told the Security Council.

Trump spoke Thursday at a meeting in NY with the president of Afghanistan.

Also discussed at the meeting were long-unresolved abductions of Japanese citizens by North Korea.

The three leaders will also meet over lunch.
