Caregiver charged after child found in auto dies in hospital

Toronto police taped off a building parking lot to investigate the death of an infant found in a car during a late-summer heat wave on Thursday afternoon

Police say the child was pronounced dead in hospital.

A young child has died after being left alone inside a hot vehicle parked in Etobicoke.

The temperature in the city reached 26 degrees Celsius on Thursday, according to Environment Canada, though the temperature inside the auto would have been much higher.

The windows of the vehicle were smashed and the boy was pulled out along with his auto seat.

Zeljna Kosovac, 50, was formally charged Friday in court in Toronto with criminal negligence.

It's not yet clear why the boy was left alone in the vehicle.

"Once on scene, the first responders contacted police and told us a child had been left in a vehicle", Const. David Hopkinson said Thursday, explaining the incident was immediately deemed "suspicious".

She was released on $5,000 bail, ordered to surrender her passport and can not have contact with children under the age of 14.

An autopsy has been scheduled for later Friday. His name has not been released.

Hopkinson said Kosovac had a connection to the boy's family, but said the specific nature of the role she played in the boy's life was not yet known. "I believe she takes the child to another care facility, then picks him up again and takes him home".
