'Save our schools:' Groups protest outside Betsy DeVos school visit

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will be in Indiana Friday on the final leg of her "Rethink School" tour.

DeVos toured Johnson County Community College as part of her "Rethink School" Tour, which kicked off earlier in the week in Casper, Wyoming.

"The current guidance is critical to ensuring that schools understand and take seriously their responsibilities under the law", the group of Democratic senators and one Independent senator wrote in a letter sent to DeVos on Thursday.

The first of three stops was a culinary class. DeVos worked alongside students and helped prepare school lunches that would be served to the 75 students at the school.

A siege of cameras followed her every step inside Hope Academy in Indianapolis. Around 40 students are enrolled at the school located in the Fairbanks Addiction Treatment Center. She then headed south to Hope Academy.

However, the school gets no direct federal money to help with the additional cost of providing treatment services.

"I think that what has happened historically is that we've set up this competition when we talk about school choice", said Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson after DeVos' visit.

Many people in the group had the message of "Save our schools".

"Parents need to have information and from that information if they are empowered to make decisions, they will do what's in the best interest of each of their children", DeVos said.

She will conclude her official visit with a stop Friday evening at an Eastern Hancock High School football game in Charlottesville.
