Paris, LA to hosts 2024, 2028 Olympics

The Olympic Center in downtown Lake Placid is lit up in the colors of Los Angeles’s sunsets Wednesday evening to celebrate the California city officially being awarded the 2028 Olympic Summer Games and Paralympic Games that day. Other U.S. Olympic host

Casey Wasserman, chairman of the former LA 2028 bid committee, said on Thursday he will help guide the newly formed organizing committee that will run the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The historic compromise sees both cities join London as three-time hosts of the summer Games, with Paris getting its wish to go first and celebrate the 100th anniversary of its last Olympics in 1924.

While Los Angeles is a relative Olympic veteran, hosting the Games twice before, in 2028 it will host the Paralympic Games for the very first time.

"This is a pretty radical revolution today", LA mayor Eric Garcetti said.

"These are two great cities from two great countries with a great Olympic history".

Ban takes the job at a time as the International Olympic Committee comes under fire again after its Brazilian honorary member Carlos Nuzman was arrested in connection with a corruption probe around the awarding of the 2016 Rio Games.

Only two candidates checked all the boxes - Paris and Los Angeles, each with a storied tradition of Olympic hosting and an apparent understanding of Bach's much-touted reform package, known as Agenda 2020. With the two teams the final contestants of an initial six-strong field having already agreed to split the 2024 and 2028 Games, there was none of the usual pre-announcement nerves and tension.

Today, the International Olympic Committee and IPC work even closer together under a renewed cooperation agreement in which the International Olympic Committee supports the IPC and the Paralympic Games.

After the membership gave the cities a standing ovation, IOC President Thomas Bach added: "It is really this win-win-win situation we were all together looking for". After the wait of nearly 100 years, Paris has clinched the hosting of 2024 Olympics.

Los Angeles, too, has many existing venues that it plans to use - a reflection perhaps of residents' distaste for spending large sums of money on a single sporting event.

"We're ready now", Garcetti insisted, speaking of a city that has virtually every sports venue already in place.

Under Ueberroth's leadership and management, the first privately financed Olympic Games resulted in a surplus of 250 million USA dollars - money used later to support youth and sports activities throughout the United States. Beach volleyball will be played near the Eiffel Tower; cycling will finish at the Arc de Triomphe; equestrian will be held at the Chateau de Versailles. Through ticket sales, TV viewership and commercial partner involvement, the USA will be given a massive chance to catch up to other countries such as Great Britain, Brazil and Japan, where the Paralympic Games are now more a part of mainstream sports culture. The main question was: Which city would agree to take 2028? Saint-Denis will host the Olympic Village and other venues in 2024.

The celebration, however, will be brief, Wasserman said.
