FIFA Rankings: Nigeria Drops Despite Impressive Run

Germany returned to the summit of the FIFA Coca-Cola World Ranking continuing this year’s ongoing tug-of-war with Brazil for top spot

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped six places from the 38th to the 44th spot in the latest edition of the monthly FIFA Rankings released on Thursday.

It means Michael O'Neill's men sit above Netherlands (29th), Sweden (23rd), and Iceland (22nd).

World Cup holders, Germany returned to the top of the rankings ahead of Brazil who formerly occupied the position.

The Socceroos dropped five spots to No 50. This means the eight weakest teams according to the Federation Internationale de Football Association ranking will be in pot 4.

Pots 1, 2, 3 and 4 will all be based on the world rankings (plus host Russian Federation in Pot 1), with one team drawn from each pot into each group.

Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings haven't always been a great indicator of success, whether past, present or future.

Three other teams reached their best-ever place - Peru (12th), Northern Ireland (20th) and Luxembourg (101st), after they held France to a 0-0 draw away. While Wales, with back-to-back wins over Austria and Moldova, climb five places to 13.

The result is also crucial for the World Cup playoffs next month.

The October rankings will be announced after the final round of qualifying matches on October 10.

The top seven seeds as of now are Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland and Switzerland.
