India on Saturday put on trial disgraced spiritual guru Gumreet Ram Rahim Singh in two cases of murder, weeks after he was sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping two of his women followers.

The sect chief is an accused in both murder cases, along with other accused, as these were carried out allegedly at his behest.

The CBI court has fixed the next date of hearing on his application for September 22, where it will take decision whether to record his statement again or not.

Contingents of paramilitary and the Haryana Police were deployed in Panchkula as security arrangements were tightened ahead of the hearing.

The policemen - two head constables and a constable - were part of the Dera chief's security detail during his appearance before a CBI court which held him guilty of raping two of his followers.

According to the prosecution, he was murdered for his suspected role in circulating the anonymous letter which made the allegations of sexual exploitation.

In an interview to The Statesman after Ram Rahim's conviction in the rape case, Chhatrapati's son Anshul said that after his father published the letters of rape victims, he (Ram Chander) was getting threat calls. Charged with inciting violence in Panchkula which killed at least 40 people, he is likely to be presented before a court in Panchkula.

Chhatrapati was shot at in October 2002.
