Yankees offense struggles again with Sonny Gray on mound

With Yankees vs. Rays moved to Citi Field LIRR extends service

Gray (9-10) again pitched well but wound up with a loss.

Greg Bird, who is suffering from back spasms and has missed 103 games this season, had an MRI yesterday.

To make matters worse for Gray, he's received either one or zero runs of support in each of his five losses, with the Yankees averaging 0.8 runs during this time on the mound. The surging Yankees have won eight of eleven following Monday's 5-1 victory at the the Tampa Bay Rays. Matt Holliday drove in the lone Yankees run with a double. Gray swiftly worked out of trouble, striking out Adeiny Hechavarria and Kiermaier to end the threat. Gray was pumped up after punching out Kiermaier and you had the feeling that the tide was turning and the Yankees offense was about to get going.

NY totaled five hits and walked six times with Todd Frazier smashing a three run bomb during a five run 4th. The New York Yankees wouldn't put together any real threat the rest of the way as Chase Headley's one-out single in the seventh was the Yanks' last baserunner. The weather was flawless, not hot enough to make the hulking pitcher burn out, not too cold to make him cool off. Girardi was sure to have a long chat after Sabathia was pulled, as he should, as the veteran left-hander will be a crucial cog in the Yanks' playoff drive.

Sonny Gray did Tuesday night.

Rays: RHP Chris Archer (9-9, 4.00) goes into Wednesday's game at 6-6 with a 2.82 ERA in 16 career starts against the Yankees, throwing at least six innings every time.

The Bombers, who had averaged 7.2 runs in their previous nine games, were held to just three hits by Blake Snell and four relievers. "I'm going to challenge guys, and I just got beat there". The 27-year-old has made eight starts for the Yankees since being acquired in a trade with the Oakland Athletics prior to the July 31 trade deadline. "But we've been talking about it for six weeks now, trying to find a way to win five, six, seven games in a row". It's the start of a 10-game homestand for the Red Sox, their longest of the season, which will feature their first series of the season against the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.

Heading into the final month of the season, the Sox were in first in the AL East with a half-game lead over the Yankees and a nine-game lead over the Rays. Their playoff position, and ultimately their World Series chances, depend on it.

Sonny Gray, Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, and even CC Sabathia have all been pitching well of late.
