West Ham register first win of the season

Angelo Ogbonna of West Ham United arrives at the stadium prior to the Premier League match between Middlesbrough and West Ham United at the Riverside Stadium

The victory lifts the Hammers off the bottom of the Premier League table after three straight defeats, while Huddersfield stay sixth despite slumping to their first defeat of the season.

"It is my birthday today and this is a great, great present for me", added the delighted Croatian.

"Sometimes you have to take a chance as a manager", Bilic explained.

"But football is an offensive game as well and we were not good enough, not fearless enough". All that was important in this game was the result and West Ham came up trumps once again, just when it was needed. "'Chicharito' had a good game, but also on the bench we had a few players like Ayew and Sakho, who are really capable".

West Ham dominated the first half of their first home match of the season, with Chicarito hitting the crossbar early on, but the period ended goalless.

Against a team out of form, they did not play with the usual energy and dynamic attacking play they had shown so far under boss David Wagner. Our biggest problem was that without the ball we fought to keep the ball out of the goal, but with the ball we were not good enough.

"It was an unlucky first goal we conceded and the second one was from a set piece but we have to be honest. If we have learned that lesson then I accept this".

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "The Sack Race has already taken one casualty this season in the shape of De Boer but we wouldn't be surprised to see Bilic packing his bags in the near future".

Despite having more of the ball and completing more passes, they only forced Joe Hart to make two saves, with both efforts from outside the box - via Philip Billing and Steve Mounie.

STRIKER Andy Carroll insists the West Ham squad are right behind manager Slaven Bilic.

The 30-year-old came through the Hammers' academy and has made more than 300 appearances for the club, but even his status as captain and a fan favourite will not guarantee him an immediate return to action.
