Newcastle gives ailing Benitez a lift by beating Swansea 1-0

Renato Sanches was the headline act in that respect yet the 20-year-old's debut proved to be something of an anti-climax.

Not that this defeat should be pinned on him for one moment.

"These games are won and lost on fine margins". They were toothless up front, desperately short of creativity and guile in midfield and gave the ball away on far too many occasions. It worked well for us last season. Although Lascelles made a superb goal-line clearance to deny Tammy Abraham in the second half, Newcastle generally looked comfortable. We have to keep our heads up. "After the game, Rafa rang us and congratulated all the team because they did a fantastic job".

"We are very glad because we planned the game to try and win three points and we did it", Moreno said.

That will take time to come and Paul Clement needs to have patience with the youngster.

"I had a good feeling going into the game with the atmosphere around the squad - then there's the actual game and what I saw was not what I expected. It's not one I'm very proud of and we've got to move forward quickly and turn that around".

We had difficulty in penetrating Newcastle through the middle, and we were always outnumbered down the flanks as the full backs were often lacking support and outnumbered. Some of the basics we never got right, just that competitiveness.

"We had enough chances to kill the game". I thought they were better than us and I think we missed an opportunity today, I really do'.

Newcastle's defensive display was the key to their success, with Swansea restricted to a handful of chances despite dominating possession for long periods.

Newcastle set a club record of 14 away wins on their way to winning the Championship title last season. "He was there watching and hopefully he is back soon and can join us", said Lascelles.

Swansea's real chance to get on the scoresheet was when Abraham got in behind the defence, went around the goalkeeper but his shot was cleared off the line by the man who nodded home the victor direct from a corner.

"What I want to regain here is my confidence - to be a happy player and also to help the team maintain a good position in the table and to play, to help, be involved as much as possible, to become better and develop as a player, which is the most important thing". We will be hard to beat back home, and if we play like this every week, we will do well.
